Studio Firn
Personal product studio

The products I build when nobody else is accountable for them.

Studio Firn is where I build and sell my own products. Same craft as the day job, none of the cover: I own the discovery, the code, the pricing, the support inbox and the P&L, and the market tells me within a week whether I was right.

01 — Why a studio

Product management with the safety net removed.

Firn is compacted snow on its way to becoming glacier — slow, patient, structural. That is the pace the studio runs at: small products, shipped properly, compounding.

In a company, a product decision passes through discovery, a roadmap, a squad and a go-to-market motion before anyone finds out whether it was right — and by then the credit and the blame are shared. Running the studio collapses that loop to days, on my own money. It is the cheapest way I know to keep my judgement calibrated.

The feedback loop is honest

No roadmap committee sits between a decision and its consequence. A pricing change either moves MRR that week or it does not, and there is nobody else to attribute it to.

I stay close to the build

Shipping the code myself keeps my estimates, my technical trade-offs and my conversations with engineers grounded in what things actually cost.

Distribution is the product problem

Solo, there is no sales team to rescue a weak position. It forces the discipline of building things people can find and immediately understand.

Small scope, finished properly

Every product here is narrow on purpose. Firn is a patience strategy — a few things that compound, not a portfolio of half-launched experiments.

02 — What is live

knmoefenen.nl

Practice platform for the Dutch KNM civic-integration exam, built and grown solo end to end.

Newcomers to the Netherlands have to pass a state civic-integration exam, and the official preparation material is thin and hard to practise against. knmoefenen.nl turns the exam into a repeatable practice loop — question banks, timed mocks, progress tracking — sold direct to candidates.

inburgeringoefenen.nl

The same engine extended to the full Dutch civic-integration curriculum, opening a second acquisition channel.

KNM is one exam of several. Rather than build a second product, I extended the platform to cover the whole inburgering curriculum and gave it its own domain and positioning — one codebase, two search footprints, two audiences that convert differently. It also carries an AI pronunciation agent that generates transcripts for spoken practice.

LoDeAyer

A disposable-camera ritual for weddings: guests scan a QR, and the whole album lands on WhatsApp the next morning.

Guests scan a QR and start shooting — no app, no account. The photos stay sealed until a reveal time the couple sets, then the full album is delivered through WhatsApp the morning after, organised by moment. Removing the install is the whole product decision: asking 120 guests to download something before the ceremony is the fastest way to collect zero photos.

03 — Why it matters at work

The studio is not a hobby line on the CV. It is where the reps happen.

Pricing and packaging, onboarding funnels, retention, churn diagnosis, support-driven discovery, shipping AI features that have to earn their inference cost — I have run all of it at small scale with my own money on the line before running it at company scale.

It also keeps me technically current. The studio runs on the same stack I talk to engineers about every day, which means my sense of what is cheap, what is expensive and what is quietly a six-week problem stays honest.

Firn inherits Aurora’s type and grid but swaps the sunrise mesh for cold glacier light — it is the maker side of the same person, not a second identity.
